I was thinking of posting this regardless and then I realized that [Dieworkwear just posted a very good guide to the current season’s options for shawl collar cardigans](http://dieworkwear.com/post/179638232514/a-literally-sick-outfit).
I should note: I definitely went through a heavy SCC phase and though I’ve begun thinning the herd, I still have at least four (cashmere, wool, cotton, and linen, respectively) because I love the style so much. For me, it’s partially because the collar gives the cardigan extra eye appeal that a plain cardigan simply doesn’t have. Sometimes, instead of a sport coat, I’d wear a SCC instead, pairing it with wool or thick knit ties to help complement the knit of the sweater.
Moreover, for colder months, a proper SCC, like Dieworkwear writes, is “chunky enough that they function like outerwear, but feel soft and cozy enough for wearing around the house.” (I spend a lot of time working from home so I appreciate the last part).
I’m guessing, within the menswear retail world, we hit Peak SCC a few years back but while more mainstream fashion brands have begun to dial things down, to me, the style is timeless. As such, more traditional menswear outlets will always carry them regardless of how the fast fashion world reacts. For sheer selection, [Ralph Lauren always seems to have a diversity of SCC styles](https://www.ralphlauren.com/men?q=cardigan) and though pricey, their [RRL options](https://www.ralphlauren.com/men?q=cardigan&prefn1=brand&srule=price-low-to-high&prefv1=Double%20RL) are killer. That $1400 “[wool-blend ranch SCC](https://www.ralphlauren.com/men/wool-blend-ranch-cardigan/451321.html?cgid=men&dwvar451321_colorname=Cream%20Brown%20Multi&webcat=Men#q=cardigan&prefn1=brand&srule=price-low-to-high&prefv1=Double%2520RL&start=1&cgid=men)” looks incredible. But uh, yeah. $1400. I mean, that’s $200 more than [O’Connell’s *12-ply* cashmere SCC](http://www.oconnellsclothing.com/O-Connell-s-12-ply-Cashmere-Cardigan-Navy.html) (that’s…a lot of ply!).
For a long time, I lusted after an [Inverallen 6A](https://www.endclothing.com/us/catalogsearch/result/?q=inverallan+6a), with its thick, cable knit but earlier this year, I was lucky to catch a used [Epaulet Coastline Cardigan](https://www.instagram.com/p/BbvjLpXjHbi/?hl=en&taken-by=epaulet) and especially with its open weave, it’s more practical for my clime.
Dieworkwear recommended, as an affordable option, these [A&F “cozy shawl cardigans”](https://www.abercrombie.com/shop/us/p/-12354820?categoryId=12206&seq=02&faceout=prod&cmp=AFF:12517476:4441350:2975314&cjevent=8157cef4dd8311e8818d00140a1c0e0e). While it has the look right, especially the marled gray one, I’d have some concerns about the cotton-blend being as good as wool for warmth reasons.
I’m also ambivalent about J.Crew’s new [felted merino wool SCCs](https://www.jcrew.com/p/mens_category/brandswelove/sweaters/wallace-barnes-felted-merino-wool-shawl-cardigan-sweater/J7847?color_name=orchard-green). I like the felted look but not a fan of the buttoned flapped patch pockets. Their “[rugged merino wool SCC](https://www.jcrew.com/p/mens_category/sweaters/cardigan/rugged-merino-wool-shawlcollar-cardigan-sweater/J7663?color_name=hthr-sienna)” is better to me though I don’t quite get how “rugged” and “merino” work together.
Visually, I like this [Brooks Brothers color-block SCC in merino](https://www.brooksbrothers.com/Merino-Wool-Color-Block-Shawl-Collar-Cardigan/MS00903,default,pd.html?dwvar_MS00903_Color=BRWN&contentpos=4&cgid=men). It looks subtly collegiate without going [Full Danny](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d8/ac/30/d8ac30d2f0641f521ac87c398eac055b.jpg). BB also has this cool, cotton “[geometric SCC](https://www.brooksbrothers.com/Geometric-Shawl-Collar-Cardigan/MS00862,default,pd.html?dwvar_MS00862_Color=NAVY&contentpos=21&cgid=0513)” on sale right now. Also on sale is [Ralph Lauren’s alpaca-blend SCC](https://www.ralphlauren.com/men/alpaca-blend-shawl-cardigan/412080.html?cgid=men&dwvar412080_colorname=Cedar%20Heather&webcat=Men#q=shawl%2520cardigan&start=1&cgid=men).
Lastly, technically a knit blazer vs. a shawl cardigan but man, I love these [Inis Meian linen pub jackets](https://inismeain.ie/shop/linen-pub-jacket/).November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11538
Should there be more shawl collar cardigans coming out later into winter? I feel there’s normally a ton, but I’m not finding many this year. I’ve been looking for a chunky navy cardigan for a couple months, one similar to A&F in the post, but have had no luck.
For reference, this howlin one would be perfect https://www.endclothing.com/us/howlin-flying-teapot-shawl-cardigan-hlnftskny.html but can’t find any.
budget is under $250. Thanks!November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11539
I bought one last year in wine, 100% lambswool, in the end of season discount rack form the private label at a local Canadian store (Simons). Paid $20 CAD, and dropped $12 more to swap the orange plastic buttons for dark brown horn ones.
I wear it around the house a lot, with jeans, a t-shirt and camp mocs. I love it.
Here is the product : [https://www.simons.ca/fr/vetements-homme/pulls-et-cardigans/laine-d-agneau/le-cardigan-col-chale-laine-d-agneau–4652-569758?colourId=61](https://www.simons.ca/fr/vetements-homme/pulls-et-cardigans/laine-d-agneau/le-cardigan-col-chale-laine-d-agneau–4652-569758?colourId=61)
You can see the buttons are ugly as hell. It’s not top tier, or even close, but it works on me. I mostly wear it unbuttonned.November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11540
I love the concept of the SCC and I have had my eyes on a few [(this one in particular)](https://www.boggi.com/en_SE/apparel/knitwear/BO18A075401.html?dwvar_BO18A075401_color=GRIG), but everytime I try them on I feel likw they ruin my silhouette. A thin merino sweater wraps itself nicely around my fairly average waist and rather compliments it. Likewise, a well-fitting sportsjacket feels like it has a thinning effect if anything, but a SCC feels like they add an inch around the waist on both sides.November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11541
>Their “[rugged merino wool SCC](https://www.jcrew.com/p/mens_category/sweaters/cardigan/rugged-merino-wool-shawlcollar-cardigan-sweater/J7663?color_name=hthr-sienna)” is better to me though I don’t quite get how “rugged” and “merino” work together.
I assume it’s because it’s blended with nylon?November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11542
That top link isn’t going to dieworkwear, it’s going to ebay. What gives?November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11543
I believe SCC has two types. The one with plain weaves that look dressy could function as outerwear in Falls or mid layer in Winter, then the super chunky one that act as a jackets. For the second type, Inverallan or RRL is superb. I own a long version of 6A in wine and a shorter one in Navy. Totally my grail.November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11544
Bought one last winter in heavy merino wool from Gustin. $200 was a lot for me to pay but worth every penny. It is heavy and warm, fits extremely well (fairly trim actually) and the construction is *very* sturdy, which is important in a heavy stretchy garment like that. Don’t know if they will run them again ever but if they do it’s well worth it.November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11545
I love shawl cardigans. I currently own three: one all cotton from BR, one that’s a wool/cotton/poly mix from Target and a lambswool one from J. Crew. I also own a shawl pullover from Belk (surprisingly good quality).
I love wearing them in colder weather, or even when the AC at work is just brutally high in the summer. I feel like they can be dressed up for work or going out for drinks, or just lounging around the house.November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11546
I’ve been trying to find an oatmeal jersey SCC. I missed out on [Velva Sheen’s version from last year](https://www.fransboonestore.com/collections/velva-sheen/products/velva-sheen-10oz-shawl-cardigan-oameal?variant=32565536650) – anybody got any tips?November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11547
Great post. I was just hunting for a new SCC after taking a few years off. Ended up with a Gap one, though now I want this Abercrombie guy…November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11548
Do you know of any beige/cream SCCs that have come out this season?November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11549
The best shawl collar cardigan I have come across besides the Drake’s cashmere one a friend of mine owns is [this](https://alpa.fi/tuote/shawl-collar-hiilenharmaa/) from Alpa, a Finnish company specializing in Alpaca products. 100% alpaca wool, knit in Europe, 4ply, corozo buttons, and a nigh on perfect cut with saddle shoulders. It’s such a perfect piece that I have bought two, one in dark grey and one in midnight blue. It looks handsome with just a t-shirt, but even better with a proper shirt under. You can even wear a more casual tie with it, like a shantung or a grenadine, if you prefer more of a preppy look.November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11550
Around this time last year I got a gray shawl collar cardigan from Gap Factory. Not sure why it was there cause it doesn’t seem like factory quality. It’s one of my favorite clothing pieces, and its a simple and effective way to look great.November 4, 2018 at 7:06 pm #11551
This seems to be the chunkiest substantially collared wool cardy I can find for a non ridiculous price
